Abstract

The aim of this paper was to analyze the different psychological processes involved in the construction of gender from the Social Identity Theory. First, we analyze how individuals maintain their self-esteem through their identification with different social groups, as well as by means of categorical thinking for the analysis of the social world. Then we discuss the different processes of causal attribution, represented by the outgroup homogeneity bias and ingroup bias, for the analysis of the social construction of gender identity. Finally, we present the limitations of the theory and their possible complementarity with gender role theory.
